A variable temperature NMR analysis and resonance assignment of the Grubbs second generation catalyst

The Grubbs second generation catalyst [RuCl2(PCy3)(H2IMes)CHPh] was analysed in solution in order to identify and assign all of the 1H and 13C NMR resonances. This was achieved through utilizing various 2D NMR techniques and by acquiring spectra at a range of different temperatures (?40 to 60 C). These assignments will aid researchers in future NMR studies of catalytic systems that employ the Grubbs catalyst by eliminating the resonances belonging to the catalyst and thus enabling the identification of any intermediates and/or new catalytic species. Restricted conformations and pi-stacking arrangement within the catalyst was also confirmed during this study.

First Detection of a Ruthenium?Carbene?Resorc[4]arene Complex During the Progress of a Metathesis Reaction

For the first time we describe the detection of a ruthenium-carbene-resorc[4]arene complex produced, as a key intermediate, during an olefin metathesis reaction carried out on a resorc[4]arene bicyclic olefin with [Ru(=CHPh)Cl2(PCy3)2] Grubbs first-generation (G1ST) catalyst. The complex was identified by using high-resolution (600 MHz) 1H, 31P NMR and DOSY spectroscopy, in a non-invasive fashion. The singlet at delta = 19.98 ppm (1H NMR), attributed to the alkylidene proton in the G1ST catalyst and that at delta = 53.37 ppm (31P NMR), attributed to the phosphorus atom coordinated with the metal, were selected as probes for a kinetic analysis. The intensity of these signals decreased at the expense of the singlets at 19.26 (1H NMR) and 52.68 ppm (31P NMR), diagnostic for the formation of the ruthenium-carbene-resorc[4]arene complex 3a[Ru]. The resorc[4]arene activated olefin proved to behave as a key propagating species leading to oligomers according to a ROMP pathway.

The activation mechanism of Ru-indenylidene complexes in olefin metathesis

Olefin metathesis is a powerful tool for the formation of carbon-carbon double bonds. Several families of well-defined ruthenium (Ru) catalysts have been developed during the past 20 years; however, the reaction mechanism for all such complexes was assumed to be the same. In the present study, the initiation mechanism of Ru-indenylidene complexes was examined and compared with that of benzylidene counterparts. It was discovered that not all indenylidene complexes followed the same mechanism, highlighting the importance of steric and electronic properties of so-called spectator ligands, and that there is no single mechanism for the Ru-based olefin metathesis reaction. The experimental findings are supported quantitatively by DFT calculations.

Homometathesis and cross-metathesis coupling of phosphine-borane templates with electron-rich and electron-poor olefins

Ruthenium-catalysed olefin cross-metathesis can be used to synthesise structurally diverse acyclic phosphines protected as their borane complexes. Homodimerisations have been investigated and proved successful only for the allyl-substituted borane-protected phosphines. In the presence of various olefinic partners, allyl-substituted P templates reacted in cross-couplings to give predominantly the E products but traces of the Z isomers were always detected in the crude reaction mixtures. In contrast, cross-metathesis of vinyl-substituted phosphine boranes took place with exclusive E-selectivity. Although the conversions were consistently very good to excellent, the yields of purified products were often significantly lower suggesting that some of the newly formed compounds are prone to decompose upon purification.
