The crystal structure of the compound chloro(eta5-cyclopentadienyl){(1R,2S)-2-[(diphenylphospino) methylamino]-1-phenylpropyl diphenylphosphinite-kappa2P, P?}ruthenium(II), [Ru(C5H5)Cl(C34H33NOP2 ))] was discussed. The pseudo-octahedral complex was found to be chiral and the configuration at the Ru atom was S. The analysis showed that the seven-membered metallacycle adopts a boat-like conformation.

Inclusion of neutral and anionic guests within the cavity of pi-metalated cyclotriveratrylenes

Treatment of the chroride bridged species [{M(L)Cl(mu-Cl)}2] (M = Ru, L = 4-MeC6H4CHMe2, C6H6, or C6Me6; M = Ir, E = C5Me5) with silver salts AgX (X = BF4, CF3SO3, CF3CO2 etc.) followed by reflux with the bowl-shaped macrocycle cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) results in the clean formation of mono-, di-, and trimetallic CTV complexes [{M(L)}(n)(CTV)}X(2n) (n = 1, 2, 3). Further salts (X = ReO4-, I-) may be generated by anion metathesis. All three types of complex display novel host-guest properties. In the case of the monometallic hosts the disruption of the characteristic columnar packing mode of the CTV, a result of the presence of the metal center, leads to the inclusion of neutral and anionic guest species (NO2Me, Et2O, H{CF3CO2}2-, etc.) within the CTV cavity. For complexes where n = 2 or 3 the inclusion of anionic guests is invariably observed. The extent of anion binding has been established by means of X-ray crystal structure determinations upon various di- and trimetallic species containing BF4-, CF3SO3-, or ReO4-, by radiotracer analysis in solution using 99mTcO4- and 188ReO4-, and by cyclic voltammetry. The trimetallic complex [{Ir(Cp*)}3(CTV)][BF4]6 (9a) in particular exhibits F¡¤¡¤¡¤C(CTV) contacts as short as 2.78(3) A. The dimetallic host [{Ru(eta6-4-MeC6H4CHMe2)}2(eta6:eta6-CTV)]4+ (4) is shown to have a specific affinity for large tetrahedral anions and will selectively extract both 99mTcO4- and ReO4- from aqueous solution, even in the presence of a large excess of Cl-, CF3SO3-, NO3-, SO42-, and to some extent ClO4-.

METHANOL AS A HYDROGEN DONOR IN REACTIONS HOMOGENEOUSLY CATALYSED BY RUTHENIUM AND RHODIUM COMPLEXES

Under suitable conditions methanol can act as a hydrogen donor towards organic substrates, especially for the reduction of ketones to alcohols.A variety of complexes of rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, and osmium have been shown to be active for this reaction; the highest activity observed so far is that of t-phosphine-ruthenium-chloride systems such as .In all the reactions the methanol is oxidised to methyl formate; some carbon dioxide is also formed.Cyclohexanone is reduced to cyclohexanol, methyl vinyl ketone and mesityl oxide to the corresponding saturated ketones, and 4-t-butylcyclohexanone to a 4/1 mixture of the trans and cis 4-t-butylcyclohexanols; aldehydes are reduced with more difficulty and cyclohexene is comparatively unreactive.Possible mechanisms for the reaction are discussed in the light of observations of changes in the catalyst precursors that take place during the rections. The reactions with methanol are also contrasted with those in wich ethanol is used as hydrogen donor.

Access to Multisubstituted 2(5 H)-Furanones Using Hydrogen Bonding-Promoted Ring-Closing Metathesis and Polyamine Workup

Structurally complex 2(5H)-furanones are potentially challenging targets for ring-closing metathesis (RCM). A hydrogen bonding-guided RCM strategy was developed in this study to provide 3-substituted and 3,4-disubstituted 2(5H)-furanones in moderate to high yields with broad functional group tolerance. A workup procedure using ethylenediamine-derived polyamines such as tetraethylenepentylamine was also established to effectively remove Ru residues in products.
