Efficient green procedures for the preparation of novel tetraalkynyl-substituted phthalocyanines

This work provides a successful, easy and efficient process for the preparation of metal-free 2(3),9(10),16(17),23(24)-octamethoxyphthalocyanine, [(OMe)8PcH2] (2), and its metal complexes [(OMe)8PcM] (3-11) (M = Zn, Cu, Ni, Mg, Co, Fe, Ru, TiCl and RhCl) by using green energy techniques such as exposure to UV-irradiation as well as microwave irradiation. Two different routes have been used, which involve modifications to that reported in the literature. The results suggest that these techniques drastically reduce the reaction time of metallophthalocyanine [(OMe)8PcM] (3-11) formation from 5-96 h to 5-11 min. The prepared octamethoxyphthalocyanines [(OMe)8PcM] (2-4) (M = H2, Zn, Cu) are used as key materials to synthesize the corresponding novel tetraalkynyl-substituted phthalocyanines 15-17.

Synthesis of half sandwich platinum group metal complexes containing pyridyl benzothiazole hydrazones: Study of bonding modes and antimicrobial activity

Pyridyl benzothiazole hydrazone derivatives containing ruthenium, rhodium and iridium complexes have been synthesized, characterized and evaluated for antimicrobial activity. Metal precursors of the type [(arene)RuCl2]2(arene = p-cymene, benzene), [Cp?MCl2]2 (M = Rh/Ir) and pyridyl benzothiazole hydrazone ligands (L1 and L2) have been employed in this work. Complexes containing ligands L1 in 1:2 (M:L) ratio yielded only one type of cationic mononuclear complexes whereas ligand L2 in 1:2 (M:L) ratio yielded two types of cationic mononuclear complexes. In same manner ligand L2 in 1:1 (M:L) ratio also yielded two types of binuclear complexes with different modes of binding. All these complexes have been characterized by analytical, spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Antibacterial studies of ligands and complexes have been carried out and were found to exhibit potent activity towards gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Reaction of the in-situ-generated ruthenium-acetylide complex C5Me5Ru(PPh3)C?CPh with small molecules

A coordinatively unsaturated acetylide species C5Me5Ru(PPh3)C?CPh (1) was generated in situ from the reaction of ruthenium-vinylidene complex C5-Me5Ru(Cl)(PPh3)=C=CHPh (2) with Et3N. The vinylidene complex 2 was prepared from the substitution reaction of C5Me5Ru(PPh3)2Cl with PhC?CH. The in-situ-generated 1 was found to react readily with a variety of small molecules. For example, the reaction of 1 with CO produced the stable adduct C5Me5Ru(CO)-(PPh3)C?CPh (3) in 85% yield, the structure of which was established by X-ray crystallography. The similar reactions of 1 with H2 and PhC?CPh also gave the hydride complex C5Me5Ru(PPh3)(H)(H2C=CHPh) (4) (76% yield) and the alkyne complex C5Me5Ru(PPh3)-(PhC?CPh)C?CPh (5) (85% yield), respectively. The reaction of 1 with CO2 produced the carboxylate complex C5Me5Ru(PPh3)(eta2-O 2CC?CPh) (6) from the insertion of CO2 to the ruthenium-acetylide carbon bond.

Cross-metathesis approach to produce precursors of nylon 12 and nylon 13 from microalgae

A two-step synthesis for producing methyl 12-aminododecanoate and 13-aminotridecanoate, the precursors of nylon 12 and nylon 13, from methyl oleate is described. First, methyl 11-cyano-9-undecenoate or 12-cyano-9-dodecenoate were prepared by cross metathesis of methyl oleate with either allyl cyanide or homoallyl cyanide, respectively. Subsequently, all the unsaturation of the two intermediates was hydrogenated to deliver the final products. This method represents the first synthesis of nylon 12 and 13 precursors from methyl oleate, an ester of an abundant and renewable natural fatty acid present in vegetable oil or microalgae. It also represents the shortest synthesis of nylon precursors from fatty acids, and as demonstrated in this study, can be directly applied to crude fatty acid methyl ester extracts from microalgae.

A new ruthenium cyclopentadienyl azole compound with activity on tumor cell lines and trypanosomatid parasites

(Chemical Equation Presented). As part of our efforts to develop organometallic ruthenium compounds bearing activity on both trypanosomatid parasites and tumor cells, a new Ru(II)-cyclopentadienyl clotrimazole complex, [RuCp(PPh3)2(CTZ)](CF3SO3), where Cp = cyclopentadienyl, CTZ = clotrimazole, was synthesized and characterized. The compound was evaluated in vitro on T. cruzi (Y strain), the infective form of T. brucei brucei strain 427 (cell line 449), on three human tumor cell lines with different sensitivity to cisplatin (A2780, ovary; MCF7, breast; HeLa, cervix) and on J774 murine macrophages as mammalian cell model. The new compound is more cytotoxic on T. cruzi and on the tumor cell lines than the reference drugs (Nifurtimox and cisplatin, respectively). In addition, complexation of the bioactive CTZ to the {RuCp(PPh3)} moiety leads to significant increase of the antiparasitic and antitumoral activity. To get insight into the potential “dual” mechanism of antiparasitic action emerging from the presence of Ru(II) and CTZ in a single molecule, the inhibitory effect of this new complex on the biosynthesis of T. cruzi sterols of membrane and the interaction with DNA were studied. Although the tested complex does not affect DNA, it affects the T. cruzi biosynthetic pathway of conversion of squalene to squalene oxide. According to the results reported here, [RuCp(PPh3)2(CTZ)][CF3SO3] could be considered a prospective antiparasitic and/or antitumoral agent that deserves further evaluation.
